Feast of San Nicola in Saponara
The Feast of San Nicola in Saponara takes place on 6 December, the day of the liturgical anniversary, and includes a rich liturgical programme. Saint Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Saponara and the celebrations in his honor are organized together with those in honor of the Immaculate Madonna, the Protector Saint of the village.
The culminating moment of the celebrations in honor of Saint Nicholas is the Solemn Procession of the Simulacrum of the Saint for the streets of the town. The following day, the eve of the feast of the Immaculate Conception, the traditional evening procession of U quadrittu takes place, during which the effigy of the Virgin, kept in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, is carried in procession. accompanied by large torches. The torch holders' clothing is characteristic, they are covered with heavy clothes to protect themselves from splashes of incandescent pitch. This ancient procession was born at the behest of the local carbonari who, spending most of their time in the mountains, were excluded both from the celebrations of the Patron Saint and from those in honor of the Immaculate Conception. So they decided to have their own procession, at an hour in which they could take part, on the day between the two festivals. This ancient tradition still lives today. in the procession of U quadrittu.
The celebrations end on December 8th with the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the solemn procession through the streets of the town of the Simulacrum of the Saint.
