Feast of S. Onofrio in Sutera
Feast of Sant'Onofrio in Sutera takes place on the first Sunday of August.
The feast begins on Saturday evening with the evocative nocturnal procession of the silver Reliquary of Sant'Onofrio with the torchlight procession. The urn that contains the remains of Sant'Onofrio is of exquisite workmanship , dates back to 1649 and belongs to the Baroque school. It was commissioned to the master goldsmith Francesco Rivelo by the Municipality of Sutera for devotion to the holy hermit. It is a wooden case covered with an embossed and chiseled silver sheet, worked with large scrolls and leaf friezes. And in that urn the goldsmith lavished all his skill, creating figures that told the life of St. Onofrio: it is surmounted by a statuette of St. Onofrio kneeling and immediately below, there are 4 angels who each hold a coat of arms of the city of Sutera. Still below, there are 4 other angels and 6 paintings are carved all around the urn that narrate the most important episodes in the life of the saint.
The feast of Sant'Onofrio continues on Sunday morning with the Procession of Miracles, intramural , around the medieval settlement of Giardinello, and ends in the late afternoon with the return to the top of the Mount of the Reliquary.
