Festa Santa Lucia di Maggio in Syracuse
The feast of the Patronage of Saint Lucia in Syracuse usually takes place on the first two Sundays of May and was born to commemorate the miracle that occurred in May 1646 when a severe famine in Syracuse was interrupted by the arrival in the Aretusean port of ships loaded with grain. The festival is locally known as the "feast of Santa Lucia re quagghie", where the term "quagghie" indicates pigeons in Sicilian dialect. According to tradition, in fact, to communicate the arrival of the ships in the port was a dove that entered the Cathedral. of the simulacrum from the chapel to the main altar, on Sundays the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral followed, at 12.00, by the exit of the simulacrum in the square and by the procession to the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia where the traditional quail throwing takes place. br> The following Sunday, on the occasion of the octave of the feast, the procession of the statue of the patron saint takes place along the historic streets of Ortigia.
