Feast of Santa Rosalia in Palermo
The feast of Santa Rosalia in Palermo, better known as the Festino di Santa Rosalia, is a mix of folklore and religion that attracts tens of thousands of tourists to the city every year. The party starts on July 10th and lasts for five days until July 15th. It celebrates the liberation of the city from the plague in 1624, following the discovery of the relics of Santuzza on Monte Pellegrino.
The first three days of the festival are a preparation for the great procession of day 14, culminating moment of the party. On the night between 14 and 15 July, thousands of devotees accompany the long march of the Santuzza chariot through the ancient Cassaro.
The Triumphal chariot of Santuzza is the soul of the festival, it is a highly symbolic contemporary work of art. The cart has the shape of a vessel, with an architectural structure at the stern at the top of which a statue of Santa Rosalia is hoisted. The chariot along the route is accompanied by the sound of the musicians who find a place on it. The procession ends at the marina with the traditional fireworks that illuminate the forum Umberto I up to the Cala.
The party ends on the 15th with the solemn procession of the relics of the Saint, contained within the silver urn .
