Christmas in Corleone
Maximilian Müller su unsplash
The Christmas period in Corleone is full of festivities and the festive atmosphere spreads in the air making it pleasantly joyful and magical. During the novena preceding Christmas, the village is enlivened by the notes, sounds and songs performed by traditional street bands. In the various neighborhoods, votive shrines, chapels and even some homes are festively decorated. Among the decorations of the "chapels", in addition to laurel, flowers and colored lights, the myrtle plant (called "murtidda") stands out, considered a good omen and a symbol of good luck, but also of the afterlife and therefore of the end of a cycle. The songs of the ancient text, a dialect mixed with Latin, handed down by the fathers, are played in front of the set up and decorated altars. In ancient times the performers were rewarded with almonds, dried fruit and sphinx.
