Easter in Barrafranca - “A Giunta”
Holy Week
Easter in Barrafranca provides for a rich calendar of events with demonstrations and processions which, due to their particularity, have been included in the Book of celebrations of the Sicilian Region.
Among the most awaited moments of the Holy week in Barrafranca there is the Vasacra, the procession of U Trunu on Good Friday, and the Giunta Pasquale.
On Holy Wednesday the Vasacra takes place, an itinerant sacred representation of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in which over two hundred people in period costume take part. The representation is preceded by a military parade of the Roman legions and militias.
The traditional visit to the tombs set up in all the churches takes place on Holy Thursday.
The evening of Good Friday has the procession of U Trunu takes place during which the simulacrum of Christ, adorned with ex-voto gold and colored shells, is carried on shoulders through the streets of the town.
On Sunday of Easter begins with the representation of the Apostles, huge simulacra dressed for the occasion, which are led through the streets of the town to symbolize the search for the Risen Jesus. The research ends in the main one where the Paschal Junta takes place between the Madonna and the Risen Christ, surrounded by the simulacra of the apostles.
