Easter in Licata

Holy Week in Licata includes ancient rites with which the faithful reconstruct and commemorate Christ's journey towards death and resurrection.
On Palm Sunday the blessing of the palms takes place in the churchyard of the Mother Church and the procession with the donkey ridden by a child representing Jesus at the moment of his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
The rites of Good Friday begin with the procession of the urn with the Dead Christ that moves towards the Holy Cross. In the evening the procession of the Sorrowful Virgin moves towards Calvary. Finally, the urn of the dead Christ together with the simulacrum of the Sorrowful Madonna, return to the Mother Church.
On Easter Sunday the two simulacrums of the Risen Lord and the Madonna move, guided by their respective brotherhoods, for the traditional Scontru, or meeting. Traditionally, a first meeting takes place in front of the Benedictine Monastery and the second in front of the college of Mary. In the afternoon, the procession of the Risen Christ with the Madonna takes place with the participation of the two brotherhoods.
