Easter in Piazza Armerina
In Piazza Armerina, the most evocative moment of the Easter rites is the Good Friday procession which is characterized by the presence of the "complainers" (also active throughout the Lenten period in the various religious events in the city). The lamentations, which originate in the Middle Ages, are typical of Easter mourning in the province of Enna. Performed in ancient Sicilian dialect, with words that are handed down over the generations, they are particularly suggestive in Piazza Armerina. They are in fact recited in the typical Gallo-Italic dialect, decidedly incomprehensible to non-natives, but even without understanding the dialect what is fascinating is the rhythm of the sound of the lamentations, dramatic and almost hypnotic.
