The living nativity scene of Giarratana is among the most beautiful in Sicily and Italy.
The nativity scene is set in the ancient part of the city of Giarratana, the "U Cuozzu" district, a place characterized by narrow streets and houses in white stone. 15 rooms are set up that recreate the peasant and artisan life of the city of Giarratana in the late nineteenth century. Real living paintings are recreated in which trades, habits and customs are revived: the family that gathers around the hearth, the men who stop to drink in the tavern after a day of work in the fields, the fruit market and vegetables, the girls who go to the seamstress to learn the art of embroidery and sewing, the busy women kneading pasta and bread and then the washerwomen, the carpenter, the miller ...
At the foot of the Castle dei Settimo the rooms end and the uphill road begins which leads to the area called "Campo Grotta". Very suggestive route lit only by torches. A pastoral environment is then recreated that leads to the ruins of the Castle, where the most sacred living picture is set up: the Nativity.
The Living Nativity of Giarratana is the first and to date only Italian Nativity scene to have been recognized of "International Interest" . It has been awarded several times as Best Living Nativity in Sicily and Best Living Nativity in Italy .
