Rietina: traditional sicilian carts in Campobello di Licata

"La Rietina" is the most important and oldest parade of Sicilian carts. Since 1737 tradition has it that during the recurrence of the feast of the Madonna dell'Aiuto the Sicilian carts move in procession to be admired by tourists from all over the world. The parades of Sicilian carts take place throughout the island and on numerous occasions throughout the year, but the Rietina of Campobello di Licata is certainly the one of greater depth and importance.
The carts parade through the streets of the town accompanied by folk groups; at the end of the parade, the auction takes place to win the "La Bannera" (flag) of the Madonna, which is assigned to the highest bidder. People who have made a promise to Our Lady of Help participate in the auction. The money raised is then donated to the Mother Church.
