Rock of the Giafante in Filicudi
The Scoglio del Giafante in Filicudi is a basaltic rock that rises near the coast, in the northern part of the island. It is a rare example of neck, the part of the solidified magma inside an ancient volcanic conduit. The volcanic building has completely disappeared following erosion due to atmospheric agents, while the central lava column can still be admired today, more resistant to erosion phenomena
The rock vaguely resembles the shape of an elephant. and from this similarity it takes its name: Giafante is a Sicilian term to indicate the elephant .
In this section the coast is very indented and full of inlets and beautiful bays.
