Dammuso of Casa Teresa in Lampedusa
The Dammuso of Casa Teresa in Lampedusa is the oldest, characteristic and best preserved vaulted stone building on the island.
The Dammuso is a typical building of the island of Lampedusa, made up of different environments and external areas, with domed roofs to better isolate the interior from the high temperature typical of the island, and to better collect rainwater.
The Dammuso of Casa Teresa it is the largest among those existing on the island. It is a construction perfectly integrated with the surrounding natural environment, which has been used for decades by farmers both as a home and as a warehouse.
The building is divided into a series of rooms, the kammara, that is the room, the makasenu , that is the warehouse, pagghiarola, that is the stable, the kitchen and the oven, to which are added the other production spaces such as the jardinu, that is the garden, and the parmentu, that is the millstone.
The Dammuso of Casa Teresa is today a museum area that tells the lifestyle of the first settlers in the rural areas of the island.
