Madonna of the Sea in Lampedusa
The Madonna del Mare di Lampedusa , also known as the Madonnina di Lampedusa , is a splendid statue of the Madonna and Child located on the bottom of the bay of Isola dei Conigli in Lampedusa. It is one of the most famous diving spots in the Pelagie Archipelago .
The life-size statue was commissioned by the well-known journalist and diver Roberto Merlo after escaping a serious accident underwater. The Madonna of Porto Salvo, represented in the statue, is in fact the patron saint of Lampedusa, of fishermen and of all those who live in the sea.
The dive to reach the statue is very simple given the almost total absence of currents and the excellent visibility, but extremely suggestive also given the richness of the seabed.
