Europe Gate in Lampedusa
The Gate of Europe in Lampedusa is a monument dedicated to the memory of migrants who lost their lives at sea and, for those lucky enough to be able to spot it from the sea after a long and terrible journey, it represents the symbol of rebirth. It is a sculpture made of refractory ceramic and galvanized iron, which stands almost five meters high and three in length, positioned on the last promontory of the island, the first part of visible land coming from Africa. Thanks to the entirely ceramic coating, the door absorbs and reflects the light of both the sun and the moon, and acts as a beacon for those arriving from Africa.
The door, the work of the artist Mimmo Paladino, was inaugurated on June 28, 2008, and was strongly desired by Amani and Arnoldo Mosca Mondadori.
