Abate Fountain of Alcara Li Fusi
The monumental Fontana Abate is located at the foot of the ruins of the Turiano castle, in Piano Abate. Alcara Li Fusi is renowned for its great abundance of spring water, and one of the springs that arise in the bowels of the Castro fortress is channeled into the Abbot Fountain. In fact, it is believed that its origins date back to the pre-Arab era.
The fountain has, at the front, a basin into which seven jets of fresh water are poured through seven bronze cannoli, and is completed by an ornate rear wall at the top by volutes and pinnacles. In the center there is an allegorical mask above which you can read an engraving in Latin dating back to the sixteenth century and attributed to Donadei, which declaims the purity and freshness of the waters. The engraving is surmounted by the city coat of arms, a crowned eagle with outstretched wings, artistically carved in stone. The side parts accommodate six equally spaced jets of water, above which there are two other ancient engravings that testify to the ancient origins of the town.
