Tono Cave in Gioiosa Marea
The Tono Cave in Gioiosa Marea is a very important place from a geological and historical point of view.
The cave is an important geological site of undoubted scientific value, so much so that it has been the subject of numerous studies over the decades. The cave is located about 10 m above sea level and is divided into two main chambers from which various circularly connected tunnels branch off. This karst-type formation, made up of calcareous rocks, is divided into numerous tunnels formed over the millennia where numerous stalactites and stalagmites are found.
The cave is also of considerable importance from a historical point of view due to the finds found in it . During the exploratory campaigns that took place in the early eighties, prehistoric finds related to the cults of Diana, Piano Conte and Piano Quartara were discovered, including several fragments of ceramics, now preserved in the Paolo Orsi Museum of Syracuse.
