Tonnara of Gioiosa Marea
The tuna fishery of San Giorgio in Gioiosa Marea, now in ruins, has very ancient origins, dating back to 1060.
It was built at the behest of Count Ruggero d'Altavilla who donated it to the Benedictine Monastery of Patti, together with the lands of Monte Meliuso.
The activity of the Tonnara, however, according to a decree of King Martino, dates back to 1407. From that moment on, the tuna fishing and processing industry animated the seaside village of San Giorgio until 1973, the year of its final closure.
