Immaculate hill in Monforte San Giorgio
Colle Immacolata in Monforte San Giorgio is a site of archaeological interest.
In the areas around the hill, some arcosolium tombs and evident signs of excavation have been found which have transformed the cave tombs into quadrangular and polygonal structures of greater height. Characteristics that can be traced back to the Byzantine presence in the area and to Greek rite funerary practices documented throughout the entire area.
Across the entire hill and, particularly in the summit part, there are also the remains of a fortification. It is believed that the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception, which today stands at the top of the hill, was built on the remains of the castle chapel.
