Leads downstairs to the prisons in Monforte San Giorgio
The Porta di Sotto alle Carceri in Monforte San Giorgio is an arch so called because it overlooked the ancient prisons of Palazzo Moncada.
The Palazzo Moncada, built in the 16th century and demolished after the Second World War, was the seat of the local rulers and the presence of the portal and the walkway above, an excellent lookout point to protect the village. It is believed that this portal was taken over by the Moncada from the previous fortification of Frederick II of Swabia.
