Porta Terra in Monforte San Giorgio
The Porta Terra in Monforte San Giorgio, with an ogival arch, is one of the few remaining testimonies of the ancient Swabian city walls of the town.
It was built at the behest of Frederick II and enlarged under Frederick III of Aragon between 1296 and 1336.
The houses that stand to the right of the gate incorporate a corner defense tower.
Between the Mother Church and Porta Terra a series of streets lead to the old Rione Costeri and to the Rione Castello, where the ancient intra moenia town developed.
