Ruins of the Castle of Monforte San Giorgio
The castle of Monforte San Giorgio is now reduced to ruins. The earthquake of 1693 which struck eastern Sicily led to its collapse and today only a few ruins remain which do not allow a reconstructive reading of its layout.
The castle stood on top of the hill overlooking the town, colle Immacolata, and had an important defensive role in the Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese periods.
The date of construction of the fortification is not known, the castellum Montisfortisi was mentioned for the first time in a document from the 12th century, but its origins are believed to be older: according to some hypotheses it would be the Castle of Dmns or Demenna dating back to an era prior to the 9th century century.
The castle demonstrated its strategic importance until 1674 during the Spanish revolt in Messina.
