Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception in Monforte San Giorgio
The Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception in Monforte San Giorgio is a small religious building that dominates the village.
The building stands above Colle Marra, on the site once occupied by the chapel of the ancient castle. It can only be reached on foot, climbing approximately 300 steps.
The simple gabled façade, flanked by the bell tower, has a stone portal flanked by two pilasters and surmounted by a tympanum with a curved perimeter resting on two capitals with decorations with leaves.
The interior, with a single nave, houses a statue depicting the Madonna and Child, to which the people of Montfort are very attached. According to some historians, the creation of the statue can be attributed to Laurana's workshop, to the school of Antonello Gagini or to Giovan Battista Mazzolo.
