Colla Barriera in Montalbano Elicona
Colla Barriera in Montalbano Elicona is a hill covered by a wooded area characterized by the presence of particular rock formations.
The Colla Barriera area is in fact known for the particular effects that erosion has created on the rocks.
On the tops of Rocca Giammondo there are the Tafoni, i.e. small alveolar cavities with particular chromatic effects.
The best-known rock formation is known as the mushroom em>. This rock, the result of degradation and erosion processes that have occurred over time, takes on the characteristic shape of a mushroom or a large humanoid head with three faces. The particularity of this shape has made the rock the object of study and has led to the hypothesis that in prehistoric times it may have been used as an object of veneration. The presence of a protrusion with a hollow at the base of the rock, which could have been used as a deposit for votive offerings, supports this hypothesis.
The Colla Barrera rock is located a short distance from a mountain hut owned by the municipality, which can be used by hikers on request.
