Buemi square in Novara di Sicilia
The small square located near the church of San Nicolò in Novara di Sicilia is dedicated to the sculptor from Novara Salvatore Buemi (1867-1916).
The square houses the sculpture called "Fune al Lavoro", in which the intent of the artist to publicly denounce the exploitation of child labour: "The child who slides the large "rope of work" through his hands, coiled on the ground behind him, certainly cannot be the bearer of the denunciation of child labour, given that the delightful putto is too young to be used for manual tasks! the premonition of a marked fate and in the spontaneous action of playing with the rope the danger of being imprisoned in a condition. (...) We are faced with Buemi's proverbial skill in childish portraits and the moving attention to detail such as the socks descend on the boots, the simple and rough dress.(...)" (A.M. Damigella - art historian)
The work initially remained in the Buemi family house in Novara di Sicilia and only in 1950 was it donated to the Municipality and placed in the small square dedicated to the sculptor.
