Ruins of the Norman Castle in San Marco D'Alunzio
The ruins of the Norman Castle of San Mraco D'Alunzio stand in the heart of the historic center and constitute, together with the square and adjacent alleys, an area of great charm and historical and artistic interest.
It was built in 1061 at the behest of Robert Guiscard on the remains of a pre-existing building. Given the strategic position overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast from Cefalù to Capo d'Orlando up to the Aeolian Islands, it was used as an important military outpost. In 1090 the castle became the residence of the Altavilla family, in particular of Adelasia, third wife of King Roger, as well as mother and regent of Roger II.
Today, part of the perimeter walls of the castle remain which have various openings including two elegant mullioned windows.< /p>
