Crasile Church in San Marco D'Alunzio
The Church of Crasile in San Marco d'Alunzio, also known as the Church of Santa Maria di Crasile or Church of Casile, is an ancient building of worship in the village.
It is believed that the Church was built on the remains of an ancient pagan temple, but there is no historical evidence to support this thesis. The name Crasile derives from the Greek χραω which means to pray by soliciting an oracle.
The church was the seat of the brotherhood of the Holy Trinity of San Marco d'Alunzio.
The building in Norman-Byzantine style, evident in the large walled window on the northern façade, has a rectangular shape and has brick seats along the walls where meetings for prayers took place. In the upper part you can see the remains of a belfry. It is the only church in the village that has a side entrance.
The interior, with a single nave, has a wooden ceiling.
