Monumental Complex of the Badia in Chiusa Sclafani
The Monumental Complex of the Badia a Chiusa Sclafani is an ancient and important building that stands in the Barrere district, the oldest in the country.
It is believed that the first nucleus of the Benedictine monastery dates back to end of the 15th century and which has been expanded and modified over the centuries.
The complex has a large central courtyard overlooked by various rooms which, with extreme probability, were the refectory, the kitchen and the warehouse. On the upper floor there were the nuns' cells and the private chapel where, even today, it is possible to admire a fresco on the ceiling and two stuccos on the walls. Inside the complex there were also a dovecote, a stable, a pigsty, a vegetable garden and two conical stone ovens which were used by the nuns of the convent to distill and produce perfumes, the profits from the sale of which helped support the convent.
Today the complex is owned by the Municipality and hosts various cultural and social initiatives.
Attached to the convent is the church of the Annunziata.
