Church of San Nicolò di Mira in Mezzojuso
Church of San Nicolò di Mira is the main church of the Greek-Byzantine rite in Mezzojuso.
Arranged alongside the Matrice Latina, it overlooks Piazza Umberto I together with the nearby Castle.
It was built in 1516 close to an already existing tower, around the end of the 16th century it was then demolished and rebuilt in larger dimensions according to the needs of the Greek-Byzantine rite.
The construction of the bell tower dates back to the beginning of the 1600s. The works consisted in raising the tower in which the public clock was located.
The building has a nave surmounted by a barrel vault. The internal surfaces of the church have Greek-style decorations created during the second half of the 19th century.
Inside there is the iconostasis which contains Byzantine icons from the 16th century, a Theotokos from the 13th century , an ivory crucifix on an ebony cross from the 17th century, a wooden Athonite cross and numerous wooden statues.
