Castle of Maredolce in Palermo
The Castle of Maredolce , or Palazzo della Favara , from the Arabic "source", stands tall and majestic at the foot of Mount Grifone.
It was probably built by a Islamic emir and later became a Norman residence, also welcoming the great Roger II. Under the Normans and the Swabians it was enlarged and transformed into a walled fortress, but inside it was a wonderful place, with a garden and even a pond-fish pond fed by a spring.
Palazzo della Favara was part of the circuit of palaces known as Solazzi Regii , splendid palaces of the Norman court located around Palermo. The circuit of the Regi palaces also included the Cuba soprana, now incorporated in the eighteenth-century villa Di Napoli, the Cubula, located in the ancient royal park of the Genoardo, the castle of Cuba and the castle of Zisa.
Today, after years of neglect and decay, the site was eventually acquired by the Region and restored.
