Utveggio Castle in Palermo
The Utveggio Castle in Palermo is an imposing neo-Gothic style building with a characteristic pale pink colour, whose appearance recalls that of a castle, located on the promontory of Mount Pellegrino.
It was built in 1934 at the behest of the Knight Michele Utveggio, based on a project by the architect Giovan Battista Santangelo, in a position overlooking the whole city of Palermo.
The building was used as a luxury hotel, and was called the Grand Hotel Utveggio. However, the hotel did not have any luck also due to the fact that the area was used by Italian and allied troops during the Second World War.
The castle, which remained in a state of total abandonment, became the object of looting and vandalism. It was acquired by the Sicily region in 1988 and is now home to a School of Excellence.
