Church of the Gesù in Palermo
The Church of the Gesù in Palermo , better known with the name of Casa Professa , built in 1564 by the Jesuit fathers, represents the most significant example of Baroque art in Palermo .
The facade has a late sixteenth-century design. On the openings some niches have been placed which house the statues of the Virgin of the Grotto with Jesus, St. Francis and St. Ignatius.
The church has a Latin cross layout with three naves and side chapels.
L ' interior is one of the highest expressions of the mixed marble decoration typical of the Baroque period.
On the first floor of the building there is the Oratorio del Sabato decorated with valuable stuccoes of 1740 made by Procopio Serpotta and a fresco representing the Coronation of the Virgin. Inside the church it is also possible to visit the Museum . In the various thematic rooms dedicated to the Jesuit Treasury are exhibited sacred furnishings, frontals, astensors and various furnishings in coral and silver of the Trapani artisan production of the century.
