Giuseppe Pitrè Ethnographic Museum in Palermo
The Giuseppe Pitrè Ethnographic Museum is located in the annex of the Chinese Palace . It was founded in 1909 by Giuseppe Pitrè, a folklorist and scholar of folk customs and traditions. Its collection today constitutes the central nucleus of the Museum.
The Museum holds about 4000 objects, including costumes, puppets, carts, nativity scenes, ceramics, popular religious prints, ex voto, glass paintings, which testify to life and culture popular of Sicily. There are also some archetypes of buildings that show the evolution of the houses starting from the haystack to get to the current houses.
Of considerable interest is the hall of the carriages where you can admire two splendid carriages that belonged to to the Senate of Palermo; the "Restivo room" which houses Sicilian carts and the room dedicated to ancient nativity scenes.
