San Leonardo bridge in Termini Imerese
The monumental bridge of San Leonardo is a grandiose architectural work built in 1721 under the reign of Charles VI of Habsburg by the architect Agatino Daidone. For over two centuries this bridge has represented the main connection with Palermo.
The bridge takes its name from the homonymous river that crosses it and its structure rests on one side in the cliff of Patare and on the other on the remains of an ancient bridge from the Roman era.
The bridge consists of a large central round arch and a small lateral arch with two lateral ramps perpendicular to its axis.
The structure is decorated, at the highest point of the arch, with a large stone figure representing a sleeping man accompanied by the inscription Secura quiete, or safety and tranquility for the traveler who crosses it.
