Peace Pagoda in Comiso
The Pagoda of Comiso, a symbol of peace, was consecrated on 7 July 1997, at the behest of the Japanese monk Morishita. It is located in front of the Comiso plain and in front of the former Comiso missile base.
The history of the Comiso Peace Pagoda begins in the early Eighties, in the middle of the Cold War, when NATO's decision to place 112 missiles is approved medium-range nuclear power plants, the Cruise ships, in the Comiso airport, thus creating the most important military base in southern Europe. Following this event, large protests begin which reach the most important Italian squares. Pacifists from all over the world arrive in Comiso. Among them is Gyosho Morishita, a former bank manager now a Buddhist monk. It was he who wanted to build the 80th "Peace Pagoda" in the world in that place, right in front of the airport, even after the end of the Cold War and the dismantling of the base.
