Giarratana

State: RG - Area: Ragusa surroundings

Giarratana is the pearl of the Iblei nestled between the ancient extinct volcano of Monte Lauro and the Santa Rosalia dam.
Before the earthquake of 1693 that destroyed the entire Val di Noto, the town stood further north than the present inhabited. The first new buildings were erected in that same year: the reconstruction began from the churches that were built in the same position they had in the ancient center.
Giarratana with its historic center, "u Cuozzu", for its exceptional historical and cultural value, it was elected "Hyblaean ethno-anthropological asset" by the Superintendency for Cultural Heritage.
