Cave of the Saints in Cava d'Ispica
The Grotta dei Santi , located in the district of Baravitalla, in the Cava d'Ispica is a large cave where traces of Byzantine paintings depicting thirty-six saints are still visible today. To date, the figures of the saints depicted are clearly visible, but the faces have been tampered with; popular tradition has it that they were defaced by someone looking for coins hidden behind their mouths.
In the site traces of inscriptions in Greek were found by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi. The same interpreted the image of a saint in the costume of basilissa as depicting Saint Lucia or Saint Helena.
