Ancient fortress of Šiklah
The ancient Fortress of Šiklah is the original nucleus of Scicli . On the rock, between hidden caves and ancient rock churches, stands the church of San Matteo , the oldest in Scicli and the main place of worship in the city until 1874. On the highest point of the hill it dominates the from the fourteenth century rock church of Santo Spirito , while further down are the remains of two ancient castles from the same period: the Castellaccio and the Castelluccio , both erected to defend the ancient Scicli.
