Church of San Michele in Scicli
The Church of San Michele di Scicli fits with elegance among the eighteenth-century buildings that surround it. It was in fact rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 in a space conditioned by existing buildings. The project was carried out using all the available space and with the aim of forming a scenographic backdrop that would allow, on the right side, to see the church of Santa Teresa.
The slightly convex façade develops on three orders surmounted by a triangular tympanum. On the first order, the portal is flanked by Corinthian columns culminating with a cornice interspersed with a heraldic shield. In the second order there is a large window enriched with floral garlands and closed by a wrought iron jalousie. The third order has a neoclassical setting due to the lack of columns replaced by flat pilasters ending with Corinthian capitals that frame the belfry. Of particular value is the side opening of the church that overlooks Via Penna which has an entrance rounded by a smooth splay specially made to avoid weighing down the side elevation of the church, preceded by five steps that follow the sloping course of the road.
The interior, with an elliptical plan, has a polychrome decoration characterized by countless stuccos, frescoes, paintings and sculptures. Of particular value are the decorations of the mid-nineteenth century that reproduce musical instruments located on the sides of the organ, placed on an internal wrought iron balcony supported by four columns.
Among the works kept in the church of interest are: a wooden crucifix from the 15th century and an oval-shaped canvas depicting the Madonna delle Grazie from the 18th century.
The annexed monastery, built in starting from 1770, it develops in a triangle close to the church.
