Museum of Ancient Cartia Pharmacy in Scicli
The Antica Farmacia Cartia is a liberty jewel of the city of Scicli. It was inaugurated on 11 July 1902 thanks to Guglielmo Cartia, the first member of the family of pharmacists and apothecaries among the most renowned in the city. Since 6 April 2014 it has become a museum.
Of considerable value are the beautiful original early 20th century furniture in Douglas pine and embellished with elegant floral and vegetable carvings and enhanced by the Art Nouveau painting by Giovanni Gentile representing the Greek and Roman goddess of health and hygiene, Hygieia, in evidence on the large mirror of the central door, dividing the space used for the public from the private one of the galenic laboratory. The display cases of the furniture protect the containers that contain the compounds, solid and liquid, used in the laboratory to make medicines, laboratory tools, stills, bronze and stone mortars, test tubes and medicines, covering a period of time that goes from the early twentieth century until the eighties of the last century.
The Antica Farmacia Cartia is the film location of the successful fiction series "Il Commissario Montalbano" and "Il Giovane Montalbano" inspired by the historical novel by Andrea Camilleri.
