Colonna Henriquez Castle in Vittoria
The Castello Colonna Henriquez di Vittoria was born as the residence of Countess Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, and is located in the oldest part of the town, with the western side facing a large square.
It was built in 1607 , same year of the foundation of the city of Vittoria.
The castle has a rectangular plan and is spread over two floors. On the ground floor, it retains part of the original structure, built with small blocks of local sandstone. The ancient part of the castle has a very simple façade formed by four plinths, pilasters and pronounced capitals that delimit it. A large door covered in sheet metal leads into a large atrium which leads, through two elegant arcades, to two large rectangular rooms. In front of it there is a beautiful three-light window, which in the center has a corridor with a barrel vault, which leads into the rear courtyard. Following the latest restoration work, a cistern for collecting rainwater was found in the atrium, which in the past served as a reserve basin, to cope with periods of water scarcity.
