Mother Church of Bisacquino

The majestic Mother Church of Bisacquino, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, overlooks a beautiful churchyard depicting the town's coat of arms made with mosaic processing of colored ashlars.
It was built in 1713 on the same site where the sixteenth-century matrix once stood.
On the Baroque-style façade, the baroque bell tower and the 20th-century clock tower dedicated to San G. Battista stand out. It is an Archimedes machine clock, that is, it is equipped with a device that from the summer solstice to the winter solstice chimes the Ave Maria at vespers.
The interior, in the form of a Latin cross, it is divided into three naves. The internal naves are rich in gilded stucco typical of the 1600s, among which the transept attributed to the serpottian school stands out.
Among the works kept in the church of particular valuable are: the painting of the Madonna delle Grazie, by an unknown author, dating back to the 18th century; the painting of the Madonna della Provvidenza also by an unknown author and dating back to the 18th century; a majestic wooden canopy sculpted by the Bisacquinese G. Bellacera in 1792; a gestatory chair, the sedan chair in gilded wood, adorned with sculptures and very fine paintings, dating back to the 18th century; a large canvas depicting the Madonna del Paradiso by G. Martorana from 1717; an urn of the Dead Christ made by local craftsmen from the 19th century.
