Feudal castle in Campobello di Mazara
The Feduale Castle of Campobello di Mazara, also known as the Ducal Palace, is among the oldest buildings in the town.
The castle, of medieval origins, was transformed into a noble residence in the 17th century.
The The castle does not have the typical features of ancient medieval castles, such as towers, loopholes, drawbridges and battlements, but has the appearance of a squat stately palace.
Traces of the ancient architecture remain only in the structure: the great thickness of the walls which reaches two metres, the lowered arch of the access portal which overlooks the municipal villa, the presence of the underground rooms which were used as prisons until the mid-19th century. In correspondence with the main balcony, located on Via Garibaldi, there is the coat of arms carved in stone of the Di Napoli family, dukes of Campobello.
Oral tradition speaks of the existence of an underground passage that connects the castle with the house of Birribayda . Passage that no one has ever managed to find.
