Norman Arch in Mazara del Vallo
The Norman Arch of Mazara del Vallo is the last vestige of the Norman fortification works with which the city was equipped.
The Norman Arch was the gateway to the castle that was built by Ruggero I d'Altavilla after the liberation of the city from the Arab domination in 1072. The Castle was demolished in 1880 for the construction of a public garden, the current Villa Jolanda.
The arch has an ogival shape and is composed of two pointed arches with space for a shutter between the two arches. A circular arch was inserted later to reduce the width of the entrance.
