Church of San Nicolò Regale Mazara del Vallo
The Church of San Nicolò Regale di Mazara del Vallo is a church of Arab-Norman style which stands on the left bank of the Mazaro in the historic center.
It was built in 1124, it has a square plan with three apses and a dome, set on a large and low cubic drum, which surmounts it, typical of cube. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the church underwent a radical transformation to adapt it to the new baroque canons, becoming an octagonal plan with a pitched roof. In the eighties the church was restored to its original appearance by regaining its medieval appearance.
The church has a square plan, with three apses, and a crowning of battlements and a hemispherical dome.
Inside there is a small altar, four central columns and small columns embedded in the corners of the three apses and a floor with a colored drawing of Islamic inspiration.
Of particular interest is the underlying base, in which traces of Roman mosaics from the late imperial age.
