Archaeological area of Monte Castellazzo di Poggioreale
The Archaeological Area of Monte Castellazzo contains the remains of an ancient settlement, presumably of Elymian origin.
Recent excavations have brought to light only part of the residential settlement. It is believed that the site has been inhabited starting from the 7th century BC, although it is not excluded that some nuclei may have been inhabited even in earlier periods.
According to a local hypothesis, the remains of Mount Castellazzo are believed to belong to the ancient city of Elima, so called from the name of the Trojan leader Elimo who, fled from his city by sea following Aeneas, found safety on the coasts of Western Sicily.
