Ruins of Poggioreale
The Ruins of Poggioreale are the remains of the city of Poggioreale destroyed by the Belice earthquake of 1968 . Following the earthquake, the city was abandoned and rebuilt downstream. Today the ruins of Poggioreale represent the historical memory of a tragic event.
The town with its streets, alleys, squares, post office, library, churches and school stopped in January 1968 From the windows it is still possible to see furniture, clothing, furnishings, school desks and everyday utensils, a sign of a suddenly broken everyday life. Most of the buildings show evident cracks, some are even completely open in the middle and now invaded by spontaneous vegetation.
