Fort of Mazzallakkar
The Fort of Mazzallakkar is an Arab fort located in the area of the Mills, so named for the presence of several mills operating thanks to the waters of Rincione, in the lower part of the territory of Sambuca di Sicilia.
La its construction dates back to 830, a period in which the Arabs founded Zabut, the current Sambuca.
The fort has in each corner a circular tower covered by a limestone dome, with a cuspid ornament that must have been a flame or a crescent.
The fortification remained in a good state of conservation until the 1950s, when the Carboj dam was built. Following the construction of the dam, the fort is partially submerged by the waters of Lake Arancio for at least six months a year. This led to a slow and constant deterioration of the structure which compromised its stability.
