Santa Sofia church in Ferla

The Church of Santa Sofia in Ferla dominates Piazza Guglielmo Marconi with its circular churchyard and a wide staircase.
The current construction is posthumous to the earthquake of 1693. Before then, the city of Ferla had two dedicated churches in Santa Sofia: the first located behind the current Carmine Church of very ancient origins; the second in the Ronco valley in a cave that also housed the altar until the nineteenth century.
The current building has a limestone facade, characterized by simple lines. It is divided into two orders, the lower one is marked by paired pilasters with Corinthian capitals. It has a bell loggia with three lights, very similar to that of the Chiesa del Carmine.
The interior, with a single nave, is in the Corinthian style. The walls are decorated with painted stuccoes and neoclassical friezes.
