Church of the Holy Cross in Francofonte
The church of the Holy Cross in Francofonte, located in a scenic position at the crossroads of four important streets, was born as a votive chapel on a site believed to have originally been occupied by a simple cross.
The building has a characteristic octagonal layout and at each corner there are pilasters in the Ionic style. The portal is delimited by a pair of Ionic-style pilasters and surmounted by a broken tympanum.
The most characterizing element of the building is the dome covered with white, blue and blue tiles, and with ribs are highlighted by tiles in green ceramic.
The interior has undergone considerable alterations and nothing remains of the ceramic floors of Caltagirone or of the altar. There are still traces of ancient frescoes visible in the intrados of the dome and the drum.
