Canali Fountain in Francofonte
The Canali Fountain in Francofonte is a monument that has an important historical value for the town. According to the popular tradition, in fact, the name Francofonte derives from this fountain.
The name of the fountain Canali, on the other hand, is believed to derive from the fact that the water gushing from the rock was conveyed with tiles or canali. Starting from 1569, the fountain was also called Fontana Grande, in reference to its large size compared to the others located in the area.
The first masonry fountain probably dates back to the 16th century. In 1885 the fountain was completely rebuilt and the washhouse was built the following decade.
The fountain, set against a rock wall, is made of sandstone. In the central part it is delimited above by an arched decoration, and has three water spouts.
